Lai Foong Beef Noodles, KL

One of the oldest hawker in down town KL and one of the best. I rarely take beef but this was recommended by someone and I decided to give it a go and boy that was one of the best decision I ever made.

Located along the bustling street in KL, it is located in one of the corner coffeeshop on Jalan Tun HS Lee. This hawker has been around for quite a while and the place will be jammed pack with office employees, so if you want to have a taste of it - better be prepare to sweat and get sticky! Well, I went in the morning, so the coffeeshop was literally empty.

I bet you are already drooling because I am! What's so special about this bowl of beef noodles? EVERYTHING! The noodles are known as "lai mien" meaning pulled noodles - it is a traditional way of making the noodles by hand. Not many people make their own noodles these days and you can taste the difference so badly! The noodles was really chewy and there was a type of taste to it, a very homely delicious taste that makes you go back for more!

The soup was W.O.W. Thick, rich, aromatic and flavorful. It was rich in beef taste that I could just drink the whole bowl of soup alone. The beef balls were decent but the beef loin was so ohmygod. It was prepared, marinated and cooked till tenderness. Each bite of the beef was a burst of flavor and juiciness - so tender that it just falls apart after a bite. That's how good it was.

It is a pretty big bowl and for about RM 7, I think it is so worth it.

Coffeeshop in Jalan Batai, Pusat Bandar Damansara

This coffeeshop is quite popular among office workers, especially for the Chinese since they served pork loaded dishes. It is located behind the row of Hock Lee Restaurant, it is quite a distance from the offices located in Menara Millenium.

The guys loved the pork noodles and urged us to give it a try. Hey, I'm always up for good food even it means walking across the busy road in stilettoes. Hahaha. The place is scorching hot and you'll be sweating even before you ordered your food! During lunch hour, it is so packed that you would have to wait for a table, so if possible, head out from your office by 11.30a.m. to get a seat.

I'm unsure about the name of the coffeeshop since I never took notice of it, but it is the last shop behind Hock Lee Restaurant. You wouldn't miss it since the other end is a mamak stall.

They served a variety of dishes but what was claimed to be really good, finger smacking good was the duck wanton mee, wanton mee, fish head noodles and pork noodles.

The pork noodles that looks utterly good which I regretted not ordering!! The girls loved this better.

I ordered the wanton mee since I'm a huge fan of it. But to be honest, it wasn't that good, I've tasted better. The aunty selling wanton mee in TTDI did a better job at it. Maybe its a choice of personal preference - this was more chewy and the pork was generous in amount.

Peter's Pork Noodles, Money Corner, Brickfields

Hands up pork noodles lover! This was deemed as one of the most popular pork noodles around Brickfields, we became jaywalkers just to cross the main road to tryout this pork noodles! This place was hard to find, well if you're coming from KL Sentral direction, it was rather hard to be notice since its located across a small alley. If not, it is located opposite the YMCA building.

The coffeeshop was hot and stuffy, but this don't deter so many office employee to sit in the heat and enjoy their meal. There are a variety of hawkers in the coffee shop, the popular one would be the banana leaf rice stall (malay), the chinese mixed rice, the western hawker and the pork noodles stall.

You can order either the dry or the soup version of the pork noodles. The more popular one was definitely the soup pork noodles. There was a variety of kueyteow or beehoon and you could request for extra egg at RM 0.50 if I'm not mistaken.

The Dry Pork Noodles with Soup

So I had the dry noodles for RM 5.50 (small bowl), the large bowl was RM 6.50. The noodles were tossed in a rich amount of soy sauce and topped off with a generoud amount of pork lard, though I never take pork lard. But the best way to have the dry noodles is to douse it with some soup, if not you will find it difficult to enjoy your noodles since it was so dry!

The soup was overloaded with minced pork and pork chunks. It was juicy and succulent. Each bite was a burst of flavors, well burst of minced pork that was well marinated. I wouldn't say it was the best, but it certainly was good.

Banana Leaf Rice
Looks pretty good too. My senior chose to have something different instead.

Earth calling to all pork noodles lover, this is the one place that you should give it a shot.

Homie Recipe, Sooka Sentral

Currently, I'm based in a clients place in KL Sentral and I'm always trying out new places around KL Sentral. I must say this place deserves two thumbs up. Located in Sooka Sentral, it is a medium size shoplot with simple settings of wooden stool and table.

It can get a little stuffy inside the restaurant because of poor ventilation as the kitchen is an open area. They prepare the noodles right in front of you, the aroma of the pan mee is awesomely declicious. The variety on their menu is limited, which means shorter time of picking what you want to eat.

Barley Soya @ RM 2.80
Their barley drink is good. I love it to the max! Its not a plain ole barley, but you get a surprise in your first sip. Rather than just barley, you have a taste of good ole soya milk mixed with the barley which was totally godly! They served it with a rich amount of barley, gingko and fuzhuk.

Hot and Spicy Pan Mee @ RM 9.90
Two times that I visited Homie Recipe and in both times, I had this. It was just that good. This pan mee was so delicious and sets itself apart from all other pan mee was because of its sauce and noodles. The pan mee was thick and crunchy, not the thin, starchy type that most pan mee shops serve.

The sauce was just so finger licking good. It was thick, spicy and wonderfully flavored. Thinking about it makes me drools. It was a whole bowl of godliness.

Dry Chili Shrimp Pan Mee @ RM 9.90
My seniors ordered this and it looks pretty good either.

I would definitely come back for more!

Restaurant Yap Hup Kee, Kuala Lumpur

This has to got to be my dad's favorite yongtaufoo restaurant, well mine too. They have one of the best yongtaufoo and cheecheongfun. Their varieties are limited but it is so good that you call for more than 1 bowl. Well, at least we did.

Located in a very small quiet alley of KL, it is terribly hard to find if you're a newbie and GPS can be unhelpful at times. Till this very day, we still have problem searching for the restaurant! But the food is so damn good till we go back everytime, getting lost just doesn't matter!

Usually, we order the second till last dish, except for the fried prawn dumpling. I have pictures of some only since we were so hungry that I had to forego taking some pictures!

Among the varieties they have for the yongtaufoo.

The curry cheecheongfun is good and so delicious that we ordered two bowls. Their cheecheongfun was chewy and thinly shredded that allows easy consumption. The soup was especially delicious and mouthwatering. Their plain cheecheongfun (which I don't have a picture of it) is equally good. Soft, smooth and chewy cheecheongfun topped with fried onions and shrimp is heavenly! Definitely a must try!

Their wantanmee is very different from the one you have at the usual hawker stalls. This was good and delicious. The egg noodles was chewy and springy, while their sauce was two thumbs up. The minced meat was an added bonus since it was so well marinated.

Dry curry chicken noodles - one of my favorite. The noodles was so chewy and springy, but what set it apart was the curry sauce itself. Thick, spicy, rich and wonderfully tasting - yeap. that's how I describe the sauce. The chicken was well cooked too, soft and tender. Again, I would recommend this!

The fried version of yongtaufu. Their condiments are generous in portion, you don't have to worry of thick flour coated delicacies with little fillings. These were super generous and each bite filled with satisfaction!

This soup prawn dumpling was GOOD! Generous, thick and rich with fillings. Well marinated and nothing lacking. This is what I call food worth our money. Juicy succulent prawns.

Well, I'm an avid fan of greens - there couldn't be no greens in my meal. Fret not, there's a whole range of greens for you to pick so that you can have a balanced diet.

This place is two thumbs up for me. I always loved the food, no qualms about it. The price too since its super cheap for whatever we ordered. All I can say that I really recommend this place. The only downside would be the MSG in the food, but whatever, apart from that, its GOOOOOOOD.

Restaurant Gou Lou, Uptown

Looking for good fish head noodles is tough because they usually never live up to the standards that I expect them to. But luck was on my side, I found a place which serves a pretty good bowl of fish head noodles, here in PJ! But of course, there were downsides to it as well.

Located in Uptown, behind Jojo Pan Mee that row, it is easy to get a parking if you're there during the weekend or weeknights, but if you're there for lunch during office hours, good luck with that. I was there on a Saturday night, it was pretty quiet with a few family around.

I ordered their homemade herb drink aka "Pat Ji Chou" which I am not quite sure what was its english name. However, this was really good - it was sweet, but not too sweet. Very suitable with the fish head noodles that was steaming hot.

Mom ordered the watercress drink - another type of "cooliing" drink or in Cantonese terms, more "liong". Again, it is delicious and not too sweet.

However, their homemade cincau was a tad disappointing. The syrup was lacking of the smell and taste of pandan leaf.

The fish paste noodles is a good substitute for customers who refuse to spend time and effort savoring the fish head. The paste was well marinated and there was a generous amount of paste in the dish itself. But what deserved more credit was the soup. It was thick and milky and delicious compared to most of the watery soup that I had in other fish head noodles shops. We requested for less milk, so make sure you don't do that because I think with more milk, it tasted even better and mind blowing.

I had the fish head noodles - the instant one according to the menu. It is not that they used instant fish or what not, but I wanted to the non-fried fish head which means the one poached in soup. So instead of getting fresh fried fish, I opted for the healthier option. They used a fresh water fish named the Bonito Fish, the flesh itself was soft and smooth.

I am quite happy with the fish itself. But there was one downside! They gave me the stomachs and the fins! I don't even know how to eat them as it has a funny smell and it has lots of fats! So I felt ripped off. Unless you love fish stomach, tell them specifically you don't want it!

Bro had the tom yum fish head noodles. It was a little dilute but the tom yam taste was there. Rich in taste and quite spicy. He had the fried fish head noodles and boy, I regretted ordering the non fried fish. The fried version was way better, delicious and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. I was literally stealing my bro's fish meat!

The fried dumplings are a must try. It is small in size and relatively expensive for 6 miserable pieces BUT I can assure you the dumplings are no rip off. It is small but compact with minced meat. Each bite into the dumpling oozes a juicy minced meat filling wonderfully marinated.

The service and food was satisfactory, I would most probably return for a second round. Their pricing is also quite reasonable. However, there was one major downside I would highlight. Their soup is MSG loaded, like seriously heavily MSG overloaded. I was downing 2 bottles of water after the meal and it didn't curb my thirst at all. So, if you are alright with heavily MSG food, give this place a shot.
